little puddles
6 Apr–5 May 2024
From April 6 to May 5, 2024, Gallery Common is pleased to present little puddles, American artist Matthew Brandt’s first solo exhibition in Japan. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, April 5 from 7-9pm.
Incorporating unexpected materials and methods into his experimental photo-based practice, Matthew Brandt (b. 1982, Los Angeles) upends the idea that a photograph must simply be an image neatly developed onto glossy paper– in his Lakes and Reservoirs series, for example, he develops photos of lakes using lake water; in his Wai’anae series, he buries photographs of the Hawaiian landscape, allowing the island to leave a mark of its presence on the image through natural erosion. If a photograph is something that captures a moment in time, Brandt’s works explore the limits of what this can mean.
