Born in Japan and now based in Sydney, Takasaki’s experience living in various cultures serves as the background for his collage-like approach, which extracts and combines images from different periods. In this regard he has always prioritized the visual image first. While references to a wide range of art history from Fauvism to Cubism can be seen in his work, he distances himself from any particular position or unifying narrative, highlighting the constantly shifting nature of the visual. Just as fashion is updated through simultaneous actions of self-representation and concealment, Takasaki’s works emphasize the fact that interpretations of visual imagery are constantly in flux.
