Gallery COMMON and Each Modern are pleased to present a joint booth at Asia Now Paris featuring Japanese artist Ichi Tashiro and São Paulo-based Taiwanese artist Lin YiHsuan.
Lin YiHsuan’s fourteen-year sojourn in the distinctive cultural landscape of Latin America has provided him with a lens distinct from the conventions of Western art. Brazil, the most prosperous hub for abstract expression in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere, has offered him fresh insights through its focus on the non-objective abstract theoretical concept of 'Forma.' In Lin’s paintings, the vibrancy and contrast of colors and forms, informed by his immersion in Latin American life, have become dominant themes over the past five years.
Lin’s works find their complement in Tashiro’s sculptural abstractions, which, in addition to color and shape, incorporate the third dimension of space as an additional element. Carving into wood panels to create deep canyons and winding valleys, Tashiro then overlays colored paper into the plains and crevices, creating powerful works that seem as if they could be maps of the soul. Tashiro’s bold abstractions are a maturation of methods that recall the Automatists and Dadaists, whose ideas of the automatic and subconscious and use of collage and surrealism formed the foundation of what is now his expressionist approach.

ICHI TASHIRO
Born in Ehime, Japan in 1984, Tashiro’s practice is a diverse combination of sculpture, mark-making, and image-making. His most recent series of works begins with the process of carving and etching deep lines into thick wooden panels. Tashiro then uses paper, newspaper, books, and magazines, as well as pigment, ink, marker, and various found materials to create sculptural collages that traverse abstraction and surrealism. His two-dimensional collages, on the other hand, are often fantastical narratives that stimulate the imagination, providing an intriguing counterpoint to the physicality and presence of his powerful sculpted works, which demand awareness of one’s surroundings. Tashiro’s work continues to evolve as he explores the different possibilities of expression through material versus image. Tashiro’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Belgium, Denmark, Singapore, and Tokyo. He has also participated in art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong and ASIA Now Paris.
LIN YIHSUAN
Lin YiHsuan relocated to Latin America in 2009 and has since lived in Honduras and Argentina. Currently, he lives and works in São Paulo. Lin's recent important solo shows include "The Sun’s Pencil" (2023) at Nanjo Art Museum, Okinawa, "Density" (2023) at Gallery Weekend Beijing and Each Modern, Taipei, "a man called log" (2021) at Each Modern, Taipei, "Sob o Céu Estrelado" (2019) at Ateliê Fidalga, São Paulo, and "We are Turtles" (2019) at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei. Lin's recent group shows include "Here is Where We Meet" (2023) at ChiaYi Art Museum,“Morgenrot und Abendbrot” (2022) at Galerie Nagel Draxler Munich, "Out of Summer" (2019) at Simon Lee Gallery, Hong Kong, "Li Yuan-chia and the Homages to" (2019) at Each Modern, Taipei, and "Poetic Gaze: Yilan Art Museum Collection Exhibition" (2018) at Yilan Art Museum, Yilan. Lin has also participated in residency programs at Ateliê Fidalga, Sao Paulo (2019), ISCP, New York (2019), and 18th Street Art Center (2013).
Gallery COMMONとEach Modernはこの度、Asia Nowにて共同ブースを出展いたします。日本人アーティストのIchi Tashiroと、サンパウロを拠点に活動する台湾人アーティストのLin YiHsuanの二人展を開催いたします。
Lin YiHsuanは、ラテンアメリカの独特な文化的環境での14年間の滞在から、西洋美術の慣習とは異なる視座を身につけました。ブラジルは、ラテンアメリカ、さらには南半球で最も抽象表現が盛んであり、その非具象的な抽象理論のコンセプトである「フォルマ」を通して、彼に新たな洞察力を与えました。リンの絵画では、ラテンアメリカの生活に浸ることで得た色彩とフォルムの鮮やかさとコントラストが、この5年間の中心的なテーマとなっています。
Linの作品は、色彩と形態に加えて、空間という3次元の要素を取り入れたTashiroの彫刻的な抽象作品とともに空間を作り上げます。木板に彫刻を施し、深い渓谷や曲がりくねった谷を作り出す田代は、その平原や裂け目に色紙を重ね合わせ、まるで魂の地図のような力強い作品を生み出します。オートマティスムやダダイストらによる自動筆記や潜在意識、そしてコラージュやシュルレアリスムの使用は、Tashiroの表現主義的なアプローチの基礎を形成しており、彼はそれを大胆な抽象表現へと昇華させます。

ICHI TASHIRO
1984年生まれ、愛媛県出身。マーク・メイキング、イメージ・メイキング、と彫刻を多様に組み合わせたTashiroの作品は、物質とイメージによる表現の可能性を追求しながら、進化し続けている。近年では、厚い木製パネルに深い線を彫り、その後紙、新聞、本、雑誌、インク、マーカー、などさまざまな素材を使って、抽象と超現実主義を行き来する彫刻的なコラージュを制作しています。一方、Tashiroの平面的なコラージュ作品のシリーズは、想像力を刺激する幻想的な物語であることが多く、周囲を意識させる力強い彫刻作品の身体性や存在感とは対照的である。香港、パリ、ニューヨーク、ロサンゼルス、アムステルダム、ベルギー、デンマーク、シンガポール、東京などで個展やグループ展で出展されてる。また、アートバーゼル香港やTaipei Dangdaiなどのアートフェアでも作品を発表している。れません。
